Ride the Snake into the sunset…
I have now gone to Snake Valley for the last time for the state. Last week, I did my final transducer run with Stefan. In exactly one month, I will be leaving my cube for last time, destined for the unemployment line. But, gotta show of some of the greatness of the West Desert one more time. The best part about the December run is the sunsets and sunrises you are forced to see.
This is the worst part. Please note that this is a maximum temperature, attached to a warm building in a warm human-use area. Our instruments read -16C, and the closest weather station read -4F and -3F Thursday and Friday.
The cold did do something cool at Gandy Salt Marsh. Look at this pic carefully. You can see layers or sheets of ice on top of other ice… very strange… any ideas as to why this happens?
We saw this… not as cool, and probably harmless, but we didn’t touch it with a bombing range and mining so close…
I thought it was pretty cool that one of the sites has turned into a frat pad…. their were empty beer cans and condoms lying on the ground…. WOW….
Had to have one more “Matt Special” at the Border Inn (which has a facebook now, by the way). This is a big salad with lemon caesar dressing, and a chicken quesadilla jammed with mushrooms, minced garlic, grilled onions, and tomatoes, laced with sour cream. Mmmmmm…
So, a bitter (cold) and sweet trip. I will be back as a tourist sooner than later…

Aww…
the freezing reminds me of ig pet where the early cooling material has a different chemical composition than the later cooling material … and stuff …

Very well put…
In my class, I’d describe that more as “the fast-cooling stuff coming out first n’ stuff and then the other stuff is what’s made of what’s left behind.” So Matt, are you going to spend any of your new free time “searching for work” while hanging with friends in LA?

Hmmm… we’ve thought about a trip to LA, but probably not. Since $$$ will be tight, and since Shawn’s sister is flying to Salt Lake for Xmas, we will be staying here. Sorry. There’s always SFWIV in Arches/Canyonlands…

When?
@sheilster -
Well, Spring Break? I’m not gonna have a job in the way, probably… You jobbies need to figure it out…
great pics. as for the layers, could some warming have occured and then a refreeze? i have seen layers like that at the beach with salt water and wondered the same and thought of some other melt happened and then a freeze. love the moon shot. and i love the dexter series!
I have property in Ely so I understand what you’re going through. I hate this time of year in that area.

A fellow Ely fan, eh? Awesome! I hope you enjoy it while you can, before it is a dust bowl… damn Vegas… I love that valley and general area now that I’ve worked there so long, EVEN this time of year.
Forget what Vegas is going to do to it. The BLM never gave up the rights to most of the land in ELY even though it was sold and now they are planning on strip mining a large chunk of my land and there isn’t a damn thing I can do about it.

Ah yes, I know what you are referring to. It is really hard to fight against things like that because it is such a big provider of jobs in a place that has few…
Sorry! Well, if you need a geologist, let me know!
Will do! What I really need is someone who wants to buy 400 acres across from the grocery store.
Being athiest shouldn’t be a big deal at all. I hate religion, it causes war for no reason what so ever.
@Pink_TeaCups -
Exactly! It is the single greatest cause of hatred, discrimination, and suffering ever devised by mankind. Have you seen Religulous? Gotta check that out if you have not…
